New Delhi, India – February 15, 2025 – A devastating stampede at New Delhi Railway Station has claimed the lives of at least 18 people and left dozens injured as chaos erupted during peak travel hours. Authorities are investigating the cause of the tragic incident, which unfolded on one of the station’s busiest platforms.
Panic and Overcrowding Trigger Tragedy
According to eyewitness reports, the stampede occurred around 6:30 PM when an overcrowded footbridge leading to multiple platforms became jam-packed with passengers rushing to board their trains. A sudden surge of movement, reportedly triggered by an announcement of a last-minute platform change, led to panic as travelers pushed forward.
“There was shouting, people trying to move in both directions, and then suddenly people started falling,” said Rajiv Mehta, a commuter who narrowly escaped the chaos. “It was sheer panic, and those who fell had no chance of getting up.”

Emergency Response and Casualties
Rescue teams and railway officials quickly responded to the scene, attempting to clear the bottleneck and provide medical assistance. Emergency personnel transported the injured to nearby hospitals, where several remain in critical condition. The death toll may rise as authorities continue to assess the situation.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure the injured receive the best medical care,” said Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana. “An inquiry has been launched to determine the exact sequence of events and prevent such tragedies in the future.”
Government Reaction and Investigation
In response to the disaster, the Indian Railways Ministry has announced an immediate investigation into the safety measures at New Delhi Railway Station. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure at one of India’s busiest transportation hubs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and promised swift action. “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the tragic incident at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with the bereaved families, and we are ensuring all necessary assistance to those affected,” Modi stated on social media.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered a high-level probe and announced financial compensation for the victims’ families. “Each family of the deceased will receive ₹10 lakh in compensation, while the injured will receive financial aid based on the severity of their condition,” he confirmed.
